Poetry News

The Poetry Caravan was first launched by Usha Akella in Greenburgh/White Plains in 2003 with the mission to offer Poetry readings and workshops to people at a disadvantage. The Caravan extended its reach to women's shelters, nursing and senior homes, mental health institutes and hospitals becoming one of the most successful poetry outreach projects.Over a 1000 free readings have been offered in the White Plains and suburbs area in New York. The Caravan continues as a collective doing outstanding work.

Austin Poetry Society is excited to announce the Austin chapter of the Poetry Caravan in January 2015. The project will be managed by APS board members, Usha Akella, Carie Juettner and Barabara Gregg. The caravan will continue with the original mission of the Caravan to ensure poetry reaches those who cannot access poetry readings and workshops on their own. Poets will volunteer time to read at a roster of venues. Gradually, the outreach will expand to include poetry workshops.

If you are interested in poets coming to your organization or you know of an organization who would be interested, please email me or call me at 914.686.4487. Call or email me if you wish to participate as a poet.

If you are interested in launching a local branch of the caravan in your city, that would be a wonderful addition to the project.

If interested in helping out with the project, call me at the same number.
