A Hundred Measures of Time
Nammalvar, Penguin (India)

'Little worms that live in a wound
do what they do.
what do they know of the world?
I learned these songs from the cunning
Tirunal
who uses me to sing of himself
Its' like people making meaning
from the chirp of a lizard.

I knew a cat with a face
like a star
i waited for it to die
so my heart would hurt
a little less.
Now my nights are darker,
my life easier,
and I've returned to the tribe
from which I came
our granaries lusdh
with words and lovelessness
' I knew A Cat'

In the heady seconds in which a breeze would lift your cuff enough to expose an ankle, I wanted my dust mingled with yours forever- Federal Scene
